Aluminum Can collection involves bagging cans that are dropped
off at various collection sites and delivered to a storage trailer
which when full is picked up by a salvage company, weighed
and a payment made to our Club. This process can be done
by any individual with or without a truck; arrangements can
be made for pick-up and delivery of bags to our storage
trailer.
Even with the changing price of aluminum and the voluntary
recycling programs implemented by the towns Fenwick Island,
South Bethany and Bethany Beach, our aluminum can recycling
program continues important funding to one of our Club’s largest fundraising activities.
Started in 1987 by founding members Jay Downing and Cal Denis (both now deceased), our so called
“dirty dozen” continue to collect, bag and deposit an endless stream of cans, which regularly appear in
our recycling bins throughout the area, into the forty-eight foot long tractor trailer - storage units.
Sam “builds them”... Don Stewart & Jim Stone “install them” at Hockers!
On August 5th, a great group of Lions volunteered at the
concession stand at the Senior League World Series, which
this year had a total of five games broadcast on ESPN. It is
always an inspiration to see all these young athletes from
literally around the world!
On August 18th, we met with LEO Club advisor Laura Quillen and members
from other Lions Club in the state, to plan for the “3rd Annual LEO
Leadership Bash at the Beach.” This year the Bash will involves LEO
clubs from around the state, and hopefully from our eastern shore LEO
Club neighbors in Maryland. See announcement of this event that is being
sent to Lions and LEO Clubs
throughout the state.

On September 2nd, we will be delivering bowls of homemade cookies for
the families of 2nd Annual ‘Operation Seas the Day’ which will be held in
Bethany Beach. These cookies are baked by FILC members, spouses and
various friends. This ‘gift’ from our club to the families of the wounded
warriors was greatly appreciated last year and I am sure they will again
this year. Please remember to deliver your cookies to the Schoonover’s on
Monday morning, September 1st, (Labor Day… God bless you ladies!) and, if you
need them to be picked up, please call us at 302 539-2043.
On Tuesday, September 2nd we will also welcome our members back for our
new fall season with our luncheon at Harpoon Hanna’s and the following
week, on Wednesday, September 10th we will hold a board retreat to see
how we can refine the operation of club to better serve our community,
to make sure our member needs our being met and to encourage others
to join us in our efforts. Please consider attending this session and helping
us accomplish our goals. The vitality and longevity of the club hangs in the
balance.
Your Attendance is unusually important at this retreat!

Fenwick Lions now offer Vision Screening to Veterans and their
families. The Fenwick Island Lions Club, Millsboro American Legion
and the Ocean View VFW - in the full spirit of the newly formed
“Delaware Joining Forces” initiative to encourage veterans and
community service organizations to work more closely together -
will begin to offer a free vision screening opportunity to
veterans and their families.
